Barkus Parade
Feb 16, 2020
The only Mardi Gras krewe in New Orleans for the canine population. Founded in 1993, the Mystic Krewe of Barkus is a non-profit organization. The Mystic Krewe of Barkus was envisioned and created in November 1992 at a meeting of the Margaret Orr (WDSU-TV Weather Anchor) Fan Club held at Good Friends Bar. Thomas Wood brought his dog Jo Jo McWood to the meeting, where people complained about her neurotic ways. To get back at them all, Wood decided to make Jo Jo McWood queen of her parade and captain-for-life. Thus, the Krewe of Barkus was born.
Wed at the square
March to May 2020
Wednesday at the Square is a free weekly concert series sponsored by the Young Leadership Council of New Orleans. Elevated above the crowd on a big sound stage, bands perform a wide variety of indigenous musical styles, including jazz, rock, funk, swamp pop, Latin rhythms and more. Performers have included Jon Cleary, Cowboy Mouth, Kermit Ruffins, Amanda Shaw and Flow Tribe.
In addition, you will be treated to the sounds of some of New Orleans' most famous brass bands as opening acts. You can bring your own chairs or blankets and sit on the ground in the lovely tree-lined park. The front of the stage is reserved for dancing. The concert series runs from March through early June every year. You can expect the lineup to be released in January each year.
Food booths and concessions dot the perimeter of Lafayette Square, offering local culinary specialties from small plates to entrée items to delicious desserts. And, to wash it all down, a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are also for sale. Food and drink sales are what help sponsor the events and keep them. No outside food or beverages may be brought in to the park during the concerts. Local artists also sell jewelry, clothes and accessories and artwork.
Bayou Boogaloo
May 16, 2020 at Bayou St John
Every year in late May, there’s a party on the bayou when Bayou Boogaloo comes to the shore of Bayou St. John in Mid-City.
Attendees can expect to enjoy music, a variety of food and drink, as well as arts and crafts.
What makes this weekend special is the location on the banks of Bayou St. John. People fill the bayou and enjoy the music from boats, kayaks and inflatable water crafts.
Fest-goers can leisurely stroll about, grab some great New Orleans food and a cold drink, and go sit by the waterside and enjoy the scene, taking in the music of some of the city's top bands at two stages.
Bayou St. John is located off the beaten path, a few miles from the French Quarter. Boaters used to utilize the thoroughfare to get within a mile of the business section of town, taking public transportation for the final stretch. Today, the bayou does not connect to the lake, but is a great place for small boats, kayaks, and canoes to enjoy. And, of course, it’s the perfect place for a boogaloo celebration.
